Le Marais - Paris Walks Thursday 9 May 2013

Paris Walks

Le Marais Paris Walks Guided Walking Tour

Another guided tour in le Marais - where we are living.
We thought we knew a lot about this area until we took this guided tour today.
This tour is called The Marais Circuit 2. It is on the northern side of le Marais. We went on Circuit 1 on 2nd March. See blog at that time.

This walk tells stories of royalty, mistresses and intrigue and takes us to some of the elegant classical mansions with their courtyards and beautiful gardens.

It was around the rue des Rosiers (street of rose bushes) and rue Pavée. rue des Rosiers is a cobblestoned street that runs beytween rue Pavée and rue Vieille du Temple. A Jewish area. It is an area of Jewish bakeries, restaurants, butchers and fashion boutiques. One of the oldest and best preserved areas of the city. The heart of Le Marais and the Pletzl. Pletzl - a Yiddish name the old 13th Century Jewish quarter in the Marais district.

A city mansion on 60 rue des Francs-Bourgeois. Formerly known as Hôtel de Clisson and Hôtel de Guise. Has a grand courtyard with rows of columns and manicured lawns. It houses the National Archives and the Musée de l'Histoire de France. There are historical documents and paintings, including the farewell letter written by Marie Antoinette, the only known sketch of Joan d'Arc, documents by Danton, Robespierre and Napoleon. Also the jailer's keys from the Bastille.

MadameAnne de Rohan-Chalot, the mistress of King Louis XIV, lived here with her husband François de Rohan, Prince de Soubise.

1 May 2013 Le petit canon du Palais Royal

This canon is supposed to be fired on the first Wednesday of each month. It is a miniature replica of a canon and it works although we have not yet heard it. The 1st May was the first Wednesday of the month but it was not fired that day perhaps because it was a public holiday!

30 April 2013

This clock is on the tour of La Conciergerie built in the early fourteenth century.
In 1931 the Conciergerie became the first prison of Paris.
During the French Revolution nearly 3000 condemned spent their last days here.
They were then transported to la Place de la Concorde to be guillotined,
including Marie-Antoinette, the Austrian wife of Louis XVI.
