Easter Monday 9 April 2012

We were all geared up for the Easter break. Bought in plenty of food and drink. However, the only Public Holiday is on Easter Monday. On the other days, including Good Friday,  everything went on as usual and today, Easter Monday, we could still buy pretty well much what we wanted.

The weather has gone back to being a bit cooler. It is not very cold but we have turned on the heaters again. We went for a walk to the River. Went down some other street near us that we have not been down before and of course we see another church dome. Saint Augustin. Kept walking past La Madeleine, Maxims and on to la Place de la Concorde.

This is about as close to Maxim's that we will get.

and behind that is the golden domed Église du Dome which houses the tomb of Napoleon 1

to the right is le Grand Palais and le Petit Palais
behind me is La Madeleine

Easter Sunday 8 April 2012

Parc Monceau

Our Sunday walk was to the Parc Monceau and to have a look at the antiquités and arts market. The market is located here from the 6 - 15 April. It runs along the fence line of one side of the park. antique stalls of furniture, rugs, ornaments, sculptures, curiosities, lots of art work.

Everyday Life in Paris

Everyday Life in Paris /  La quotidienne en france
Sunday 1 April 2012
We walked to a Brocante d'Antiquitiés today at the Square des Batignolles in the 17 arrondissement which is quite close to us, about a ten minute walk from where we live.
This market is in this particular area only once a year. This year it was here for 5 or 6 days. Today was its last day and still going strong.
A French brocante is an antique market, flea market, bric-à-brac market. The usual items were on sale, furniture, books, clothes, silverware, glassware, china, old framed art pieces, old tools, junk etc.
The market is actually at the end of rue des Batignolles, not in the actual Square des Batignolles.

Square des Batignolles
This is not your typical square, covered in concrete. It's a garden. It's the largest garden in the 17 arrondissement - 4 acres.
NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED which means you are not trying to continually avoid dog shit, to put it mildly - "attention / regardez à la merde de chien", says Geoffrey, to me, continually.
The gardens are absolutely beautiful. there's meandering paths in the shade, a small pond, a creek, a small waterfall and lots of ducks and geese freely walking around and waddling from the creek to the pond. There is a glass walled gazebo with a sick looking orange tree enclosed in it. There are playgrounds, sand play areas, swings and other play equipment, a carousel and 2 enclosed areas for adults to play la pétanque or boules.

Trees are now in blossom.
