The Square in Front of Les Halles

1880 by Victor-Gabriel Gilbert

This is one of the most exciting things that has happened to us on our séjours en Paris.

The painting above, is by Victor-Gabriel Gilbert and called the Square in Front of Les Halles. It was on the cover of a Zola novel.

On our first extended visit to Paris, we lived closeby to the area shown in the painting.
The original is at le Musée Malreux in Le Havre. Two years ago we travelled to Le Havre and enjoyed the day there but found that the painting was not on display. I have communicated with the  curator at the Le Havre gallery for the past two years to find if it was on display yet. The painting is still not on display but guess what! She has arranged for us to have a private viewing. See below.
Our appointment is tomorrow.

Dear Madam

The painting is not exhibited for the moment but in storage.
If you want to see it, it would be possible, but we need to take an appointement.
At what date could you come in Le Havre ? There is a train from Paris, Gare Saint Lazare and it take about 2 hours to come to Le Havre.
Our new exhibition is open : Pissarro and the harbours and I suggest you to see it on the same time.

Please let me know if it suites you.

Sincerely yours
